Langata sits flood-prone beside Ngong Dam, and its tighter streets give fire very little to slow it down. This programme works the window before either one arrives.
Reading the season / 01
The work is timed rather than constant. Ahead of the long rains the focus is drainage and the households closest to the water. Through the dry months it shifts to fire — what burns, how quickly a narrow street lets it move, and where the nearest usable water actually is.
What readiness means in practice / 02
Not a leaflet. Knowing which route out of your block stays passable when it floods, which neighbour has a working extinguisher, and which number to call that will be answered. Most of this programme is conversation, repeated until it is common knowledge on the street rather than something one person remembers.
Working with the Red Cross / 03
Kenya Red Cross bring the training standard and the emergency experience; we bring the doors that open to a familiar face. Neither works as well alone — a young person from the neighbourhood gets a hearing that an unfamiliar official often does not.
